First things first, let me remind you that I have a craft fair this Saturday in Emporia from 9am to 4pm on the Lyon County Fairgrounds! Admission ($1) goes to benefit the Girl Scouts! Come see me!
I tend to have most of my big idea breakthroughs about 2 weeks after I should get started on them...finally finding a hat pattern I like was no different. I tried making a slouchy hat and that was one of my more epic failures! Boy did it turn out badly! It was my fault not the pattern so in the interest of protecting the innocent I won't link that here. Fortunately I then happened upon this cable beanie pattern by AllAboutAmi (http://www.allaboutami.com/post/129781456121/cabledbeaniev2) and it was "the one"! To be fair I was largely drawn to it due to her use of the new Bernat Faux Fur pom poms (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HHF3UQC/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00HHF3UQC&linkCode=as2&tag=alabam014-20&linkId=GJ2U4ZZQ22LRGXGT) which look so luxurious! I then found out that those are about $7 and that I couldn't get them locally. If I'm going to spend that much I'd like to touch them first, so I went the handmade pom pom route. It keeps the hat more affordable to make anyway. These take a bit of time, but the pattern is easy and you don't end up with a lot of finishing work so all in all its a win!
This is the first one off the hook! I love this plum color! (I also really love my new living room rug!) I like how thick and chunky the cables look, and most of all I love any reason to make a pom pom!
I'll admit, my head is substantially larger than that of this Styrofoam model and thus the hat looks a lot more stretched on my head, but I feel you want a snug fit on a hat and it still looks good. It has less of that cone shape on a real head...although I've never been one to mind a Conehead (We come from France!). I've also got one in a lovely pumpkin color completed...3 is not nearly enough! I spent most of Tuesday evening making one in a delightful mustard color only to discover at the end that I didn't have enough yarn left to make the pom pom at the top! Argh!
Now, if you want to know what I see when I look up from my near constant work:

That's Kipper, he's the sweetest dog who has ever walked on 4 paws! Here you see him taking a break from gently gnawing his rabbit toy. If this were his calendar spread you'd also get tidbits like "Kipper enjoys long walks anywhere, peeing on all shrubs in his path, and barking at the much larger neighbor dog. His favorite food is cheese"
